Block of the Month
September-October

Our block is "Card Tricks" using an easy method by Mackie in her Quilt in a Day book, Winning Hand.

Packets may be made up with one of these two color schemes.

Fabrics A and C (included) will be used for two of the cards. Add your own fabrics B and D for the other two. A 4" x 11" piece will be suficient for each. Choose (two) from yellow, pink or lavender. Add background fabric, tone-on-tone, white or off-white; 7" x 20" will do.

Cut a 3-1/4" square from each "card" fabric. Make a four-match unit, with the A and C fabrics kitty-corner from each other (not next to each other).

Cut a 6" x 3-1/4" piece from each "card" fabric. Join the B and D fabrics to opposite sides of the four-patch, with the rectangles touching the same fabrics in the four-patch (see diagram). Then cut four 3-1/4" squares from the background fabric, and join a background square to each end of fabrics A and C. Sew these units to the opposite sides of the four-patch, as shown in the diagram.

Cut two 6" squares from the background fabric. Cut diagonally, to yield four triangles. Place the triangles on the "card" unit, right sides together, making sure that the point of each triangle lines up with the center seam. THE TRIANGLES ARE NOT MEANT TO BE AS LONG AS THE BLOCK. Sew a 1/4" seam the length of the edge of the triangle. Press. Take your ruler, line it up across the triangles, and trim off the extra bits from the background squares. Blocks can be trimmed by the winner to a uniform size.

As Mackie wrote; "Deal with love and quilt with joy, and you'll always be a winner." Hats off to Mackie!
