Block of the Month
December-January

December's Block of the Month is called Triple Rail Fence. It is a very simple block made by sewing three strips of designated fabric colors together. This month's block is adapted from It's OK if You Sit on my Quilt Book by Mary Ellen Hopkins.

In addition to the GRAY fabric provided, please select GOLD, CREAM ON CREAM, and BURGANDY from your own stash.

Final 12 1/2" block

Cutting Instructions:

From the GRAY fabric, cut 4 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 6 1/2"
From the CREAM ON CREAM fabric, cut 4 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 6 1/2"
From the GOLD fabric, cut 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 6 1/2"
From the BURGANDY fabric, cut 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 6 1/2"

Assembly Instructions:

Following the diagram, join the pieces, remembering to use an accurate 1/4" seam. Make two 6 1/2" squares that consist of GRAY joined to BURGANDY joined to CREAM ON CREAM and two 6 1/2" squares of GRAY joined to GOLD joined to CREAM ON CREAM.

Join these four squares together according to the diagram to the left to create a block that is 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" square.

Over-All Design:

As blocks are joined together in the quilt top, the over-all design emerges. The diagram to the left shows four 12 1/2" blocks joined together.
