Block of the Month
January-February

January's Block of the Month is for a Bonnet Quilt from The Language of Flowers by Susan Branch and Marsha Evans Moore

You have been provided a green print material that you may use either for the crown and brim of the hat or for the hat band. Supply the contrasting RED material from your stash as well as an 8" square of tone-on-tone cream/off white for the background

Applique Instructions:

Make templates for hat, hat band and brim by tracing applique patterns provided in your packet. Include 1/8" allowance for hat crown, brim, and hat band shapes A and B

Reverse templates and trace each of crown, brim, and hat band pieces A and B to paper-backed fusible web. Fuse applique to fabric. Cut out shapes. Remove paper backing before positioning on quilt block.

Assembly Instructions:

Using the assembly diagram provided in your packet as a guide, arrange hat and hat band pieces in center of an 8" block of tone-on-tone cream/off-white fabric at a slant as shown in photo. Lower edge of hat band pieces should overlap tip edge of brim 1/8". Fuse hat and hat band in place.

Zigzag stitch around edges of applique pieces using matching thread.

Harriet's hat trick:

Use a 9" square for your background fabric and then trim to 8" once you have finished the applique. This way if the zigzag stitch causes any 'pull-in', your block will still be the correct size when finished.
