Your packet with instructions came with one piece of fabric that you may choose to use either for the shirt or tie. The Piece is cut 1/2 inch larger than what you will need for the shirt, but I recommend that you don't trim it to size until AFTER CUTTING the collar pieces. I found that BEFORE trimming, my piece was just barely enough to get the two collar pieces including the 1/4 inch applique turn under. |
 |
From the fabric that you have chosen for your shirt, cut the background 6 1/2 inches wide. Next cut the collar (template C and C reversed). If your shirt fabric has a definite stripe design, your shirt will be the most realistic looking if you orient the stripes and grain of the fabric as illustrated on the left. This will put the raw edge at the top of your block on the bias, but the 'shirt' underneath should stabilize it. |
| Next choose a 'jazzy' fabric for the tie. This was the hardest part for me because there is not much testosterone in my stash! Be outrageous - that makes it fun |
| Trim the shirt piece (background) to 6.5 inches wide by 8.5 inches long. Fold it in half and press the center line of the shirt along the 8.5 dimension. Applique the tie (A) so that the point is 3/8 of an inch from the bottom edge and lined up with the center line. This placement is important so that the tip of the tie is not caught in the seam allowance. |
Next applique B (the tie knot) so that it over laps the tie with the point along the center line. Since the upper edges of the diagonal will be underneath the collar, there is no need to turn under the top edges. |
| REMEASURE your block size and ADJUST TO MAKE SURE that it is 6.5 x 8.5. This is a very important step because this block is constructed such that it cannot be trimmed in a final step. |
| Now position C and C reversed so that they overlap each other and the edges of the knot as shown in your diagram. The open point of the collar above the knot should be right at the 1/4 inch seam allowance and on the center line. |
| Finally sew on the two small buttons for the collar and you are finished! |
