June's Block of the Month is called Patriotic Heart Block

Webmaster's Note: When I constructed this block I discovered a few inconsistancies in the instructions that were distributed with the block. Changes have been noted in red below. If you have a ruler that measures in eights, you can cut your 1/2 square triangle squares to size (2 3/8") and avoid trimming them later.

 

Your packet came with tan fabric. Cut the following pieces:

From the TAN
2 2.5 inch squares
1 6 inch square (will be trimmed later in construction)

From BLUE fabric
3 2.5 inch squares
2 2 inch squares
2 9.5 x 2 inch strips
2 11 x 2 inch strips

From RED fabric
1 2.5 inch square
1 2 inch square
1 2 x 5 inch strip
1 2 x 9.5 inch strip

From WHITE fabric
1 2 inch square
2 2.5 inch squares
1 2 x 5 inch strip
1 2 x 9.5 inch strip

Make 1/2 square triangles using the 2.5" squares as illustrated to the left.
1 tan + 1 blue will make 2 1/2 square triangles
1 tan + 1 red will make 2 1/2 square triangles
(1 white + 1 blue) x 2 will make 4 1/2 square triangles

TRIM after sewing and pressing to 2" squares. DO NOT omit this step unless you cut your original squares to 2 3/8" rather than 2.5"

Step 1 Sew together the 2" elements to make the block illustrated to the left
Step 2 Sew together the 3 2" elements and the white and red 5" strip as illustrated to the left.
Step 3 Sew together the white 9.5" strip and the red 9.5" strip
Step 4 Sew together step 1, step 2, and step 3 as shown to the left.
Step 5

Draw a 45 degree angle from the center of the bottom red strip to the bottom edge of the first white strip as shown. Add 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Step 6 Cut the 6 inch square of tan diagonally and sew to these two cuts. There will be excess of the tan so trim even with the rest of the block.
Finish

Add the 2" x 9.5" strips of blue to the top and bottom of the block. Add the 2" x 11" strips to each side

FINISHED BLOCK INCLUDING SEAM ALLOWANCE SHOULD BE 11" X 12.5"
