Butterflies make a cheerful spring block. Choose from a pieced version or applique version.
Directions below are for the pieced version.
I found it useful to trace the pattern pieces on to freezer paper. When tracing the pattern pieces, be sure that you draw pattern piece B including pattern piece F. DO NOT CUT F AND B APART. Also piece D is shown inside piece C in an effort to save space and paper. |
Iron freezer paper on to the right side of each fabric piece and then cut out. |
Follow the directional arrows on the template pieces to position on the correct grain of the fabric.
The black piece that forms the butterfly body should be trimmed to 1.25 inches by 4.75 inches. |
Follow the block assembly diagram and construct the block in three horizontal rows that are then sewn together.
Piece F is a right triangle with one leg longer than the other. Sew the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) to part C, positioning F so that the shorter leg of the right angle will be sewn to the black body. |
Trace the antennae on part A |
Using 2 or 3 strands of black floss, make small running stitches along the traced antennae lines. |
Square up the block |
All finished and ready for flight |
Fran Whited won the pieced butterfly blocks and Ruth Hutmacher won the appliqued ones.
