Block of the Month
May-June

Dogwood Blossom

You will need some dark green for the leaves and white or off-white for the blossom to create this springtime block. Embellish with French knots in the center and some embroidery or color on the leaf tips to bring the bloom to life

Nosegay

By the time you finish this block you will be a master of the set-in seam. There is plenty of practice here.

Fold the green print background in half and then in half again to help you position the leaves and petals. Use your favorite method of applique

Don't cut to size until after you have appliqued all of the pieces.

From your stash, select a dark green, a green floral and a pink.

Carefully trace pattern pieces to freezer paper being sure to transfer grain markings to aid in positioning the pieces. Be sure to align pieces on the straight of grain as marked so that you don't have bias edges on the outside of the block. Template C may be cut as quarters from a larger square.

Mark the positioning dots on the wrong side of each fabric piece. This will help you in aligning the set-in seams.

Sew one piece A to one piece B, right sides together as shown. Stop the seam at the positioning dot. Repeat to complete 3 AB units

Press seam toward the green floral piece. Sew piece BR to A right sides together as shown. Stop the seam at the positioning dot being careful not to sew in to the seam allowance. Repeat to complete 3 A/B/Br units.

Sew the diagonal seam of each of these units by sewing together B and Br. Stop the seam at the positioning dot being careful not to catch any of the seam allowance. Press. You should now have 3 square blocks.

Sew a background triangle (C) to either side of the two remaining green floral pieces (A) to create a triangle. Press.

Sew the 6 D pieces together to create the center star shape.

Sew F and Fr to either side of E. Press.

Assemble the block with set-in seams. Press.

Write your name in one of the seam allowances on the back.
The block should measure 12.5 inches for a finished 12 inch block.
